Andrée Valley lives in Madison WI, currently teaches clay sculpture and alternative firing methods at Madison College (MATC) and makes bright colored forms in both ceramics and metal.

For over 30 years, Andrée Valley has worked in clay, metal and paper as a studio artist. She finds different mediums invigorating. Despite the eclectic nature of the materials, her work is unified by a common visual theme of color, abstracted symbols and a sense of playfulness.

Her most recent metal work explores the concept of stacking and piling.  “Piles and stacks fascinate me.  Each of us sorts and organizes objects in our lives different ways. One person’s stack can be another person’s pile. Artistically, both are different ways of presenting an idea and looking at groups. Visually, I am interested not only with patterns that are created as different shapes are juxtaposed with each other, but also with the possibilities of obtaining visual depth on my surfaces.”

Current work in clay includes a group of hand-built mugs and bowls with majolica decoration. “I love using pattern and textures. Some patterns are fine textures pressed or rolled onto slabs from which my pieces are formed. More patterns are painted onto a majolica base with colors mixed from oxides or carbonates. I am not concerned with the functionality of my clay pieces, but rather with the idea of them as a metaphor to function.
